In July of 2018, Maysville became the 10th Kentucky city to pass an amendment adding sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity to the Commission on Human Rights Ordinance with the following language:
71.097 FUNCTIONS
(C)The Commission shall review the affirmative action policy of the city and make recommendations as it deems necessary to further the fair hiring practices of the city to give equal opportunity to all applicants regardless of their race, creed, religion, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, familial status or national origin.
(D)The Commission shall serve as the advisory group to the community development program under the citizens participation plan. The Commission shall provide for execution within the city of the policies expressed in KRS Ch. 344; shall safeguard all individuals within the city from discrimination because of race, color, religion or national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, familial status or age; and shall have all powers authorized by KRS 344.320 through 344.350.
Amendments were also introduced to the Housing Ordinance, including:
197.01 DECLARATION OF POLICY
It is the policy of the city to safeguard all individuals within the city from discrimination because of race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, family status, disabling condition or place of birth; to protect their interest in personal dignity and freedom from humiliation; to make available to the city their full productive capacities to secure the city against strife and unrest that would menace its democratic institutions; and to preserve the public safety, health, and general welfare.
This ordinance were passed and went into effect upon publication in August 2018, making the City of Maysville the 10th city in Kentucky to pass legislation protecting the civil rights of members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Second reading of the ordinance was adopted on August, 10,2018.
